This course would benefit any Service leaver applying for a management, director or non-executive role, however, it would equally benefit anyone joining a commercial business in another role across a wider variety of industries.
The course provides and overview of the accounting process to final accounts level with a focus on strategic level reporting, budgeting, financial control, and profit planning.
For those considering setting up and running a small business, on a self-employed or limited company basis, we also offer a 5-day 'Accounting in a Small Business' course.
Qualifications
There is no qualification associated with this course but it will provide Service leavers with the financial awareness and understanding to manage a budget and contribute to financial discussions and decision making in the workplaceEligibility
This short programme is open to anyone at any level who needs or wishes to understand the language of financial management and how it is applied in a civilian organisation. The course is therefore of particular value to potential business managers and executives, administrators, project managers, team leaders, marketing and sales people; in fact anyone who is, or needs to be, business focused and financially aware.Course Content
The course covers the content of Finance for Non-Financial Managers which is used widely across industry in the UK and overseas to equip managers with the commercial awareness that businesses demand.
Delivered over 3-days, the subjects covered include:
Finance fundamentals:
- Business structures, ownership and liability
- Overview of the accounting process, transaction recording and requirement to keep accounts
- Share capital and business finance
- Terminology, including assets, liabilities, income and expenses
- Accrual accounting, revenue and cost recognition
- Capital expenditure, depreciation and amortisation.
Financial reporting:
- The Income Statement (P&L), Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statement
- Internal reporting compared to statutory reporting
- Statutory accounts and the regulatory reporting framework
- Accounting standards, concepts and conventions
- Audit and scrutiny of accounts.
Interpreting financial statements:
- Using ratios to interpret financial statements
- Return on Investment measures
- Measuring performance and interpreting results.
Financial management, planning and control:
- Cash flow and working capital management
- Cost structure and operational gearing
- Contribution margin, break-even and profit planning
- Strategic financial decision making
- Financial planning, budgeting and financial control
- Capital investment appraisal.
