This course is ideal for those wishing to enter the profession of Road Haulage Transport Management or demonstrate professional competence to meet current legal requirements.

Is this the right course for me?

The course is open to all Service personnel who are interested in and have some experience of working in road haulage. There is a heavy mathematical content as well as substantial legal and business content and you will be expected to be numerate and literate to at least Level 2.

Eligibility

The course is open to all Service personnel but there is a heavy mathematical content hence you need to be numerate to at least Level 2. You will also be expected to be at least Level 2 for literacy. Any students that are not at this level should consider alternative courses. It is strongly recommended that anyone who has not reached this level should not embark on the Certificate of Professional Competence for Transport Managers (Road Haulage).

This course is examined by 2 Exams (Multi-Choice 2hrs & Case Study 2hrs 15 minutes) on the final day of the course

Course Outline: 

Day 1

The first few days, attendees will cover the modules that help to establish the building blocks of a transport company, the laws that need to be abided by in order to set up the company, marketing, commercial conduct and the Health and Safety laws which should be followed in order to run a legal and compliant operation.

Day 2

Topics covered would include trade unions, maternity & paternity and redundancy laws as well as business tax, financial management, organisational structure and key performance indicators.

Day 3

Financial management and Operator licencing laws.

Day 4

Operational and fleet management -  the course will delve into planned preventative maintenance, plating & testing as well as vehicle taxation and driver licensing.

Day 5

Drivers Hours legislation and also vehicle selection, fleet inspections and the roles of DVSA and other enforcement agencies.

Day 6

Weights and dimensions of all types of vehicles rigids, artics with various axle configurations and special types orders and safe loading of those vehicles and associated insurances.

Day 7

Vehicle costing -  looking at the costs associated with running the trucks themselves as well as the business as a whole and calculating rates for jobs, ensuring the business remains profitable. Also, traffic regulations, speed limits and road traffic accident procedures.

Day 8

International permits, insurances and documentation needed to run a successful international haulage business.

Day 9 - 11

Recap of learning and practice for exams. Understand how to use the knowledge gained and practice exam style questions and case study.

Day 12

Exams - the multiple choice test usually commences around 9.30 - 11.30 followed by the case study exam at 13.00 - 15.15.

 

You may wish to bring a laptop for use on the course, however laptops will be provided for the exam if required. 

Career Opportunities

Holders of the CPC qualification will be accepted as a competent person, and will be entitled by transport law to run and operate transport for hire and reward for themselves or other transport companies. All transport companies must employ a professionally competent person, and this qualification meets that criteria. Most larger companies keep up to 10 CPC holders within the company so a CPC will always be desired for a newcomer to be developed for future management roles. For more information see here.
