Is this the right course for me?
Attendees should have a keen interest in cycling and be familiar with some basic cycle maintenance skills. Prior use of hand tools would be an advantage. This is a Level 3 course and attendees will have to complete significant online theory work and attend several webinars demonstrating practical skills, prior to attending an intensive 2 week practical course at the workshop venue in Cumbria.Pre Course Work - Important
Pre course work will be available up to 6 weeks in advance of the workshop training, to those attendees who have paid in full for the course. This will ensure attendees have sufficient time to complete the advance learning which is a requirement of attending the 2 week practical course.

Course Content
Our Associate Provider, the Bike Inn, has produced a unique blended learning Level 3 Cycle Maintenance course which will provide attendees with an ideal combination of online flexible learning and practical assessments, expanding your knowledge base in advance of two weeks intense practical onsite training and assessments at Appleby on the edge of the Lake District in the lovely Eden Valley.
Course Structure:
Pre course online learning (6 weeks or 60 guided learning hours total)
- Attendees will have access to Google classroom with extensive resources covering Modules 1 to 6 of the course content
- Multiple choice assessments
- Structured written questions
- Home working practical sessions where possible
- Regular drop in evening video calling sessions
- Direct contact with your allocated Tutor throughout the pre course learning.
Workshop Training in Appleby in Westmorland, Cumbria (2 weeks)
- Two weeks of extremely intense practical onsite training and assessments
- 2 Tutors to a maximum 8 students enabling a very personalised learning experience
- Further practical assessments filling in the gaps from the home learning experience
- Experience of the latest technologies, both manual and electronic, including assembly, fault diagnosis from all the main manufacturers on modern bicycles
- Exposure to E-Bike systems from all major manufacturers
- Exposure to advanced tooling and their correct usage
- Exposure to best workshop practices to help maintain quality of work
- Exposure to Bike Fitting, Coaching and other business ideas that protect a business from the internet
Course Content:
Attendees will complete 12 modules of study to develop their knowledge and skills of the following:
- Tool selection depending on working environment
- Preparing frame elements for assembly
- Standards, compatibilities, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining major frame elements
- Diagnosis, maintenance and repair of rim, disc and hydraulic brakes – to advanced level
- Comprehensive gear systems including ratios, chain line calculations, installation, indexing and troubleshooting
- Suspension forks and rear suspension – to advanced level
- Tubular and tubeless tyres
- Wheel building
- Bearing technology
- Electric gears
- Ebike specific diagnosis, maintenance and repairs
- Customisations – professional bike fit, frame geometry, component selection
- Coaching techniques
- Quality control, handling customer complaints and consumer legislation basics
- Guidance on business models and trade/supplier information
Total guided learning hours are 160 learning hours. This is split between blended synchronous and asynchronous learning with full tutor support based at home (60 hours). The second half of learning will take place at purpose built facilities in Appleby (80 hours) and completion at home post course (20 hours).
Assessment:
This Level 3 course is assessed through a mix of practical tasks evidenced with photos and text and also written structured questions throughout the online and workshop elements of training. The written assignments will mostly be completed during the online element.
What to Bring:
Attendees can bring along their bike/s to work on during the workshop 10 day course – you are actively encouraged to get out and explore the area by bike during your course.
Attendees should bring along a laptop if possible, to work on their assignments and access course materials when at The Bike Inn. Internet access will be required during the 2 weeks in Appleby. The Bike Inn can provide access to a laptop if you are unable to bring one, but please notify them in advance.
