Why take this course?

If you're wishing to undertake minor building projects in the home or garden - such as a garden wall, fire pit or barbecue - this practical course will provide you with all the required skills, knowledge and techniques. Taught by experienced trades people who are experts in their field you will learn all the ‘tricks of the trade’ to achieve that professional standard. Is this the right course for me?

This course is right for you if you are keen to have a ‘hands on’ experience  and want to achieve practical results in a short time. If your aim is to develop your DIY skills to complete small projects at home then this will suit your needs. No prior knowledge is required but keenness to participate in practical exercises from the start is necessary to get the most out of the course. You are welcome to bring your own ideas and gain expert advice on how to realise them.

Eligibility

No previous experience is required - open to all Service leavers who are able to deal with the physical requirements of the course.

Course Content

This practical course takes place in our dedicated resettlement training centre, and is delivered by experienced tradesmen. During the course you'll cover the following topics:

  • Selection and safe use of tools 
  • Identify brick types 
  • Build brick corners and lay bricks to the line 
  • Fill and complete mortar joints 
  • Measure and cut bricks 
  • Bed a damp proof course 
  • Build a brick pier 
  • Set and build an arch 
  • Select correct mix proportions for requirement 
  • Mix materials to correct workability 
  • Place, compact and finish concrete 
  • Concrete foundations 
  • All relevant Health and Safety

Career Opportunities

The skills developed on this course could support you in a career as a self-employed tradesman. Equally, many Service leavers find the course of use for small projects in their own home.
