Aim of the Course
This non-examination course is designed to give an overview of the technical expertise and general management experience appropriate to bursarial or administrative appointments in a wide range of educational establishments (within the LEA, grant maintained and independent sectors, boarding and day, large and small). It is intended that by the end of the course students will have acquired a feeling for the academic environment and ethos within which the bursar operates.

Course Content
The course looks at the primary areas of bursarial responsibility, including:
  • Introduction to the role of bursar.
  • Financial management covering financial principles, budget planning, record keeping systems and managing school assets.
  • Facilities Management including dealing with contractors, commission and care of buildings, health and safety.
  • Personnel Management including recruitment, appraisal, disciplinary matters and employment law.
  • Governance and Leadership looking at Charity status, Children’s Act, school management teams, working with Heads and teachers etc.
  • Marketing the school, fundraising and commercial awareness.
  • Marketing yourself as a bursar.
The course is delivered by a range of tutors and speakers who are subject matter experts. The Head of Department will manage the course and be the point of contact.

Qualifications Awarded
The Centre issues a Certificate of Attendance.

Employment Opportunities
Prospects are good in the UK, with above 50% of independent schools preferring to appoint Service leavers.

In the State sector opportunities are more varied and positions require a greater emphasis on administrative expertise.

Further Details
We are increasingly aware of the need for School Bursars to have Health and Safety training and Accounting experience. So the Managing Safely (IOSH) and Financial Management and Accounting courses at the RTC may also be beneficial.

Right Management reserves the right to cancel and/or amend course dates, times, contents and venues as listed on this website. Every effort will be made to give the Service leaver as much notice as possible and a reasonable course alternative or alternatives may be suggested, if possible. If this is not possible or the alternative(s) is/are not acceptable to the Service leaver, Right Management, who deliver all non-contract courses listed, may refund in full the total amount paid to date for non-contract funded courses, or, in the case of MOD Contract Funded courses, in agreement with the MOD, the Service leavers IRTC grant will not be notionally reduced.
