South Devon College Careers Presentation
On Thursday 3rd May 2012, Service leavers were invited to attend a presentation by South Devon College (SDC), hosted by the Regional Resettlement Centre Plymouth. This was an ideal opportunity for attendees to find out firsthand about possible next steps, whether they were looking to improve their existing career prospects or change direction completely.

The aim of the presentation was to provide relevant information, guidance and advice on careers in the fields of renewable technology, energy efficiency, sustainable construction and teaching. The presentation also introduced the government initiative known as the Green Deal, which is focussed on energy efficiency, and provided information on opportunities in the sustainable jobs market.

Patrick McNevin, Energy Centre Director within the Technology Department, was the lead presenter with six other staff members providing specialised advice to give a better understanding for Service leavers interested in entering these particular fields. There was also information provided about the range of training courses and packages available at South Devon College, who are a preferred supplier of training to the Career Transition Partnership.

The ‘Energy Centre’ is a dynamic partnership facilitated by South Devon College bringing together key partners including Schneider, Worcester Bosch, MITIE Group, Western Electric, Green Tourist Business Scheme, Energy Saving Trust and others in a project aiming to kick-start the green economy in the area.

The project has been allocated £1.2m of funding from the first round of bidding to the Government’s Regional Growth Fund to develop a new ‘Energy Centre’ which will form a hub to meet the growing demand for high quality accredited training in renewable energy and sustainable building. Combined with raising awareness amongst business and domestic consumers, the Energy Centre will fuel the cornerstone of an economic recovery in Torbay and South Devon, ensuring manufacturers, suppliers and installers have the skilled workforce needed, directly leading to the creation of 407 private sector jobs.

After the presentation, SDC had set up a number of stands, providing Service leavers with the opportunity to break out into small groups for a question and answer session. The event was judged an outright success by all involved, and feedback from the Service leavers who attended was very positive.

You can search for courses in the sustainable industry, plus many more, in the Courses & Workshops section of the CTP website.

If this sounds like an event you’d be interested in, SDC are looking to hold another event later this year - watch out for further details on the CTP website.
