"It's run like a military operation"

Back to News
This is one of the most flattering things you can say about an organisation, says The Times (Scotland) in their recent Business Insight supplement.

The publication features an article recognising the many benefits ex-military personnel can bring to civilian organisations, and focusses on the huge variety of transferrable skills that Service leavers possess.

The article includes comment from a number of employers based in Scotland, who have recruited ex-military personnel into their companies. Walter Thain, senior vice-president Europe for Petrofac Offshore Projects & Operations says, “Ex-forces personnel have skills that transfer very well to offshore industries, particularly in the technical disciplines we are focusing on. They’re well educated in terms of their skills, very good in technical disciplines.”

“They’re also pretty mobile, used to working away from home, and often up for a new challenge. While they are all technically well qualified, our approach is all about making them oil and gas specific. They've also got that helpful mentality of following processes and procedures. All of which is a perfect combination of qualities we require.”

The article also hears from Service leavers who have successfully made the transition from the military to civilian life. Ian Polson now works for Wood Group PSN as an instrument technician. He says, “There are many similarities between my RAF role and my new position, including working in a challenging but interesting environment, s part of a small team of technicians."

"The main differences are to home life. I now know what time I’ll start and finish and am in control of any overtime, so my family and I are enjoying the stability. “ I've never looked back and regard the decision to leave as the best I've ever made.”
