From Military to Santander: Personal Banking

Richard's story
I have been with Santander since September 2016, prior to this I was in the military for 17 years I really enjoyed the development and mental challenge. The camaraderie was fantastic, bonding with everyone and the travel. I enjoyed all the challenges thrown at me as it increased my problem solving skills and ability for lateral thinking. Fundamentally learning that there is always a way!

As a Personal Banker I give customers the information they need to help them make the right decision for them. It uses my communication, listening and tolerance skills. It has allowed me to be open minded about every customer and their unique needs. It has helped me deal with things on the spot and the importance of finding a solution to get it sorted.

It is a different culture to the army and the team in the branch have been really welcoming, friendly and supportive so I never feel any question is too daft!

I would advise any ex-military to put any doubts to one side and go for it! Do not think that you cannot do it. Look at the overall picture in terms of the skills and competencies you do have and can bring to any job. The military gives you the breadth of skills you do have and Santander as an organisation appreciate that and can see the value you will add.
