CV Hints & Tips

  1. Keep it simple

Layout is as important as content when ensuring that you’re presenting the relevant information that makes you an interesting candidate to interview. Information is more digestible as bullet points rather than lengthy paragraphs, so think about how you present information. Fragment any long paragraphs with line breaks and emphasise key information you want to highlight with bullet points.

You do not need to present all the role responsibilities of jobs at the beginning of your career if they are not relevant to the role you are applying to.

Use a simple, professional font and try to keep the length to two A4 sides.

  2. Customise your CV for each application

Make your CV as relevant as possible to the role you are applying to. Expand on your relevant skills and experience that are most desirable to the role you are applying for, showing clearly that you are able to perform in that position.

Ensure any relevant information, achievements and skills relating to the role you are applying to are on the first page of your CV. Highlight what makes you the most suitable candidate for the role and why you should be offered an interview

Job titles may be different from those in the military so it is crucial that your skills and experience are clearly listed. Ensure keywords that are used in the job description for the position you are applying for are included in the relevant part of your CV to highlight your suitability for the position.

  3. Include a summary

A summary is a great way to show an employer your greatest skills and qualities that make you right for the role. It humanises the CV and provides the person reviewing your CV with an opportunity to understand who you are and what you are looking for in your career. Keep it short and succinct. If you feel proud of any key achievements in your life, add them to this section of your CV, for instance, fund raising, community development and sport achievement, to name a few.

  4. Review it thoroughly

Spelling and grammatical mistakes can be the difference between being offered an interview and being rejected. Once you have finished writing your CV, review it thoroughly and ensure you have picked up any errors and amended them. Spacing can sometimes be affected if you have been cutting and pasting so look out for any formatting errors too.

  5. Include a covering letter

A covering letter demonstrates that you have read the job as it allows you to explain why you believe that you are suitable for the role. Keep the letter simple and brief limiting it to three to four paragraphs. In this section, you can highlight why you are interested in working for AECOM and why the specific role appeals to you. In addition, you can write about your experience and your interests.
