Driver Certificate of Professional Competence/ADR

The transport industry continues to experience an ongoing shortage of trained LGV drivers, and with the increasing move via the internet towards home shopping, both for groceries and other goods, the requirement for delivery drivers continues to grow.

There are many opportunities for Service leavers to find employment as an LGV driver, and this applies to both experienced drivers from the Armed Forces, and those who have more recently completed a driver training course.

Work attachment opportunities are regularly advertised through CTP and many employers will provide on the job training for those who have recently gained their licence/s.

All LGV drivers in the UK must now hold the Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) qualification. This requires drivers to complete 35 hours of approved driver training every 5 years.

CTP deliver a 7 day Driver CPC course combined with ADR, the carriage of hazardous goods. This course is suitable for those Service leavers who obtained their initial LGV licence prior to 10 September 2009, or those who have obtained their licence since 2009 and have already completed parts 2 and 4 of their initial LGV training. Full details on eligibility and the initial requirements for new LGV drivers are contained on the Government website

When booking the course, you will be asked by the Course Booking and Information Centre Staff to confirm your eligibility for the course. Please ensure you are eligible prior to booking by checking your licence and reading the full course information on the CTP website.

The 7 day CTP course will cover the required 35 hours of driver training and will qualify Service leavers to drive LGVs over 3.5 tonnes, including dangerous goods.

Course contents include:
Driver CPC
  • Driver health, Defensive and fuel efficient driving (3.5 hours)
  • Drivers Hours (3.5 hours)
  • Digital Tachograph Rules (3.5 hours)
  • Load Safety (3.5 Hours)
ADR
  • Core Module (required by all entrants)
  • Packages Module
