This month we’d like to talk about the value of creating a video CV for certain applications.
Recruitment has become far more dependent on technology, while the skills businesses are looking for have also evolved in response to recent world of work trends around the integration of AI. So why not showcase how you’ve adapted to this new technology-driven world and create a video CV? Especially as 79% of employers think video applications are the most effective way to secure a dream job in 2024!
While it might not be relevant for every application, it can really help you highlight your creativity and innovation when applying for roles where these qualities are essential - helping you stand out as the prime candidate.
Here are 4 key things to consider when creating a video CV:
Why am I using one? When a video CV is relevant, it can better highlight your personability and communication skills. These traits can of course be mentioned in a written CV, but using video will help you showcase these qualities in a way that enables any civilian recruiter to see first-hand what you would bring to the role.
How long should it be? It’s commonly accepted that a video CV should be no more than 3 minutes long. Any longer and you may lose the attention of the viewer. Remember, the first 30 seconds are most important (think about your 30 second commercial); if you fail to grab their attention immediately you might lose them completely. So be sure to start off strong and build from there.
Is my background OK? Think about your background. When creating your video CV, you want to be in a well-lit room, with nothing distracting in the background and no interruptions. Ensure that you’re the focus of the video instead of a miscellaneous detail you may have on the wall or shelf behind you.
What do I say? Develop your CV like a story, with a clearly defined structure: beginning, middle and end. Having a format in place and knowing exactly what you’re going to say will ensure that your video remains clear and concise; highlighting your key skills and qualities in a professional and confident way.
