Supporting Ryan Lane on his resettlement journey
Background

Ryan Lane left the Army in 2020 as a Corporal after serving for 24 years. After taking stock of his career, he decided it was the right time to transition from the military into civilian life and registered for resettlement with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).

Resettlement

During his resettlement, Ryan attended a CTP Career Transition Workshop (CTW), as well as a vast number of Employment Fairs, all of which he found extremely useful:

"The most helpful elements of the CTW were the CV writing skills and learning how to articulate myself in a way civilian employers would understand. I also attended every possible job fair and gained a lot from talking to various companies."

Ryan also met and developed a great working relationship with Jackie Bird, his Career Consultant:

"My Career Consultant, Jackie, provided me with great support and help throughout the CTW and beyond. She was always available over email and telephone whenever I required some guidance."

Finally, Ryan found great value in the CTP website and its accompanying online resources:

"I used the CTP website to its absolute fullest, utilising myPlan constantly to help keep myself on track and ensure I hit my own timelines. Pushing out my CV via RightJob, the CTP’s job finding service was great for securing and getting feedback from interviews."

Successful Outcome

Following his resettlement journey with the CTP, Ryan is now a Security Officer for G4S, training to become a Supervisor and Welfare location officer; and the opportunity arose during a CTP Employment Fair:

"I was chatting with a police officer about potential career paths when the lady running the EDF stand overheard and asked for my contact deails. Jump forward a few days, with various emails going back and forth and I was offered an interview – which led to me securing the role."

Ryan’s existing skills and qualifications, which he developed and gained in the military, have been crucial in ensuring a smooth transition into his new role:

"Overall, I’ve carried over a lot from the military to my current role. My UWO and welfare qualifications are definitely being put to good use."

Advice

As his closing words of advice to fellow Service leavers, Ryan goes on to say:

"Embrace the change, and don’t sell yourself short."
