Supporting Mark Jennings on his resettlement journey

Category: Success Stories Publish date: 02/12/2020

Supporting Mark Jennings on his resettlement journey Mark Jennings left the Royal Navy as a 1710 NAS Lead Repair Technician in 2020 after serving for 23 years. Having completed his engagement, Mark registered for resettlement support with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).

"I enjoyed being part of a team as well as travelling around the world; although I didn’t enjoy being away from home for long periods of time, and so the end of my service came at a good time for me."

Resettlement

Once registered with the CTP, Mark attended a 3-day Career Transition Workshop (CTW), and undertook the CTP provided Domestic Electrician training course:

"I attended a CTW where I found the CV writing element to be the most useful part. I also completed the Domestic Eletrician course that the CTP provided - coming from a mechanical background, this course was great in helping me get some electrical qualifications on my CV."

Mark then mentions the support he received from his CTP Career Consultant and via the CTP website:

"I used the CTP website mainly to look for jobs, and CTP RightJob was great for that. I also received excellent guidance around courses from my Consultant."

Successful Outcome

Mark is now a CISBOT Technician for ULC Robotics; a role he discovered when attending a CTP Employment Fair.

"I went to the CTP Employment Fair in Southampton and ULC were there. I spoke to the director of UK operations and left my details with them – which later resulted in being invited for a site visit and then an interview.

My mechanical experience transfers perfectly to my role as a CISBOT technician, while gaining an electrical qualification was pivotal in me securing the role. Not having a background in gas was an obstacle, but thankfully, ULC have supported me in developing the knowledge required for the job."

Advice

As his closing words of advice to fellow Service leavers, Mark goes on to say:

"Don’t leave it until the last minute. Plan ahead and research the field you want to go into. Ultimately, make sure you’re prepared."
