Supporting Daniel Coates on his resettlement journey
Background

Daniel Coates was an Engineering Technician when he left the Royal Navy in 2020 after serving for 6 years. After taking stock of his career, he decided to transition into civilian life in pursuit of more time with his family, and registered for resettlement support with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).

Resettlement

During his resettlement, Daniel attended a CTP Career Transition Workshop (CTW), as well as a range of workshops and a Civilian Work Attachment (CWA), all of which he found extremely useful:

"I found the RISE poster advertised during the CTW extremely helpful and informative, while the Full Scope Electrical Installation course helped sharpen my skillset.

I also attended a CWA at HMRC for two weeks and this set me in good stead to see how things worked in civilian employment – making for a more comfortable future first day.
"

Daniel also met and developed a great working relationship with his Career Consultant:

"My Career Consultant offered me a lot of guidance whenever I needed it. At one point, due to Covid-19, I contemplated staying in the military, and my Career Consultant helped organise my thoughts and identify the best course of action for me."

Finally, Daniel found great value in the CTP website and its accompanying online resources:

"I found the CTP’s job finding platform RightJob very useful and would definitely use it again – it’s how I found and applied for my role with HMRC.

The CV builder available on the CTP website was also extremely valuable in helping me get my CV in order.
"

Successful Outcome

Following his resettlement journey with the CTP, Daniel is now a Higher Officer Tax Compliance Caseworker in the HMRC..

"The process of applying for the role through RightJob was very easy and the communication between myself and HMRC was fantastic. I now investigate tax compliance of individuals and small businesses."

Daniel’s existing skills and qualifications, which he developed and gained in the military, have been crucial in ensuring a smooth transition into his new role:

"Skills I gained in the military are extremely useful in my new role, and I’ve used my presentation, management and research skills a lot since starting."

Advice

As his closing words of advice to fellow Service leavers, Daniel goes on to say:

"Leaving the military can seem daunting, but if you put in the correct preparation and focus on what you want, there will be a job out there for you."
