Background
Adam Nelson left the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a Flight Sergeant (FS) in July 2020 after serving for over 25 years. After taking stock of his career, he decided to transition from the military into civilian life and registered for resettlement support with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP):
"Honestly, there was very little about Serving that I didn’t enjoy. However, I’d reached a stage in my career where employment opportunities were more limited, and as I was approaching my fifties I felt that it was an appropriate time to find a new career in civilian life."
Resettlement
During his resettlement, Adam attended a CTP Career Transition Workshop (CTW), and undertook vocational training courses including the Cat C and ADR/CRC Driving Courses; ensuring he was fully equipped to succed in civilian life.
"The CTW is a good base point from which to approach your resettlement process – providing a section that focuses on the crucial element of compiling your CV.
Also, the vocational training courses were both very well run and an excellent use of my resettlement funds."
Along with his additional training courses, Adam received constant support from his CTP Career Consultant, Doreen Tolley, as well as his local Employer Relationship Manager:
"My Career Consultant was very supportive and made herself available for any questions I had; while my Regional Employer Relationship Manager directed me to employers who would be interested in my skills, and actually set up the introduction between myself and my new employer – I have a great deal to thank him for."
Successful Outcome
Adam is now a Task Specialist for DEA Specialist Aviation; a role he secured with the support of his Regional Employer Relationship Manager.
Adam’s existing skills and experiences have well equipped him for his new position, where his first assignment will be acting as a sensor operator on one of DEA’s air platforms; where the nature of the work is very similar to that performed when deployed in the military:
"A great deal of the experiences and qualifications I gained during my Service career are transferable, and my employers quickly realised that many of the skills I’d gained while deployed mirror the qualities required to succeed in my new role."
Advice
As his closing words of advice to fellow Service leavers, Adam goes on to say:
"Think clearly about your plans for the future, research the job market and engage with the CTP. I’d encourage any Service leaver to ustilise the CTP training packages as they offer excellent value for money. All the CTP staff are keen to help Service leavers transition to civilian life, so make the most of their support."
