At 16 years old, Phil Rose ran away to sea! He started his career in the Royal Navy as an electrical engineer which took three years of training. When he started a family, he wanted to be back on dry land and so he took a job with the Ministry of Defence, maintaining sensitive equipment as an electrical engineer.
After 10 years he decided to have a change and worked for a Pharmaceutical company as an electrical and design engineer.
He then joined Sodexo 12 years ago as the Head of FM at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey. He helped mobilise a new prison contact, HMP Northumberland, and then moved into his current role as Head of Hard FM Custodial Services for the UK.
Phil is in charge of the Total Facilities Management for five prisons in England and Scotland and Exeter courts.
He is responsible for the statuary and contractual compliance, all maintenance, life cycle work and major projects. Under his remit is electrical, gas, mechanical, HVAC (heating, ventilation and cooling) and plumbing.
Phil says - “If you’re looking to leave the Forces, consider a role in the prison service with Sodexo. Not only will you receive great training and development but there is a similar mind-set and close working relationships as in the Forces, so the transition is smooth.”
Phil and his FM team say health and safety is paramount and they are always looking to improve the skill-set of the team and expand their knowledge. They operate a buddy scheme to support each other, share good ideas and look for ways to be innovative.
Phil also says - “Sodexo is a huge company with a big focus on FM, in a wide range of industries, so there’s lots of opportunity if you join us.”
