Background
Jay Samuel left the Royal Navy as a Leading Hand in September 2021 having served for 9 years. After taking stock of his career and current situation, Jay decided it was time for a change, and was delighted to receive resettlement support from the Career Transition Partnership (CTP).
Resettlement
Once registered with the CTP, Jay attended a 3-day Career Transition Workshop (CTW) as well as a CTP-provided IOSH Managing Safely training course at our Aldershot training centre, ensuring he was in the best possible position to secure civilian employment:
"I attended a CTW and found the CV writing support particularly useful. This course was extremely helpful and gave me a great starting point to pursuing the job I wanted. I also attended the CTP’s IOSH Managing Safely training course, which helped to make my CV more attractive for my line of work."
When asked about further CTP support he found useful, Jay cites his CTP Career Consultant:
"Jane Walsh and Donnah Milner were extremely helpful throughout the whole process; from CV writing support right up to undertaking my IOSH course. The Plymouth CTP team couldn’t do enough for me and I’m extremely grateful."
Successful Outcome
Jay is now an Engineering Technician for Sparrows Group, a role he found through networking on LinkedIn:
"I found the job by using my LinkedIn network. I’m now responsible for replacing and maintaining crane cabs, where the transferable skills I learned during my time as a Marine Engineer have been hugely helpful. The IOSH course I attended will definitely come in use when assessing risks and writing risk assessments."
Advice
As his closing words of advice to fellow Service leavers, Jay goes on to say:
"Make the most of the CTP and listen to what is explained to you. Attend as many courses as you can as well!"
