From Parachute Regiment to Sodexo

Category: Success Stories Publish date: 03/06/2021

From Parachute Regiment to Sodexo Neil Payne is the new Head of Security at Sodexo’s women’s prison, HMP Bronzefield. Neil comes from an Armed Forces background and tells us about his move from the Army to a prison.

Neil, what’s your background?

"I was in the British Army, the Parachute Regiment, and my Rank was Late Entry Captain. After completing a successful 27-year career, I wanted a new and exciting challenge."

What attracted you to Sodexo and working in
a prison?

"The complexities of working in a prison were a huge driver, and I’ve never wanted a stagnant job! I enjoy challenges, people engagement and making a difference. And working in a prison allows you to make a positive change for both the staff and residents."

What skills and experience did you develop in the forces which you can use now?

"I realised that I had learnt many skills in the Army, the key ones being Leadership and Management, plus Training and Development. But that list is far from exhaustive; I have a plethora of transferable skills. Which is why I firmly believe there are a number of varied roles and responsibilities in Sodexo prisons, that are extremely well suited for those coming from a military background."

Did you have any concerns or worries about moving career?

"I didn’t have any worries, but I have learnt many lessons since leaving the military. It can be difficult to find a job you really want to do. I successfully applied for and worked in other positions prior to my current role, but it was only after taking up a previous job, that I quickly realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do. So I kept looking until I found what I wanted."

What do you think of being in a new environment and in a new career?

"So far, it’s great - new skills, new people, new environment and new challenges; which as previously mentioned, was a huge driver in my decision making. Location, salary, quality of work-life balance are also key, but it was more about the job satisfaction than anything else."

Any final advice for someone looking to leave the forces.

"Plan early and decide on your priorities - location, salary, job satisfaction etc. Look at the qualifications you will need for the jobs you’re interested in and focus on achieving those qualifications before leaving the military. Use your SLC and especially your ELC whilst serving. Build your network and speak to those who have gone through the process, as those still serving don’t have the ‘realities of war’ transition experience."
