As a Local Council, we offer a diverse mix of services including adult and children’s social services, highways, leisure facilities, planning and council housing. We also cover customer service, facilities management, libraries, registration services and much more.
Providing such a wide variety of services means we require a diverse range of roles to fulfil our responsibilities to our residents, including: Engineers, Drivers, Solicitors, Planners, Social Workers, Public Health Nurses, IT Experts and many others!
Why are we a good fit for Service leavers?
We appreciate that veterans often want to give back to the community, and working for a local authority means you get to influence how our society functions.
Chris Loughlin is one example of making a successful transition following a military career. Chris now works for Somerset Council as a Project Manager, having previously served 22 years in the Armed Forces. While he enjoyed his time in service, he had no desire to extend his service as the operational tours away from his family were taking their toll.
Chris now enjoys greater flexibility in his role with us, and having been a SNCO for a number of years, his organisational skills and ability to produce results have aided his work in Project Management.
We recently asked Chris for any advice he could offer other Service leavers and he said: “Know what you want to do for a long-term career before you leave the Service, and research the role and market as much as you can”.
