Join the Winning Team at Active Plus in Cornwall! Active Plus is a Community Interest Company that uses the skills, experience and expertise of injured and retired military veterans to deliver unique programmes that build confidence, improve motivation, and generate a sense of belonging and self-worth; helping people to unlock and fulfil their potential.

Through a combination of group and 1-2-1 support we help people to look at things differently - empowering them to embrace change, set clear goals and be ready to take the next step. Unique to Active Plus is that these benefits apply to our service users and the ex-armed forces instructors, who are being supported by Active Plus on their own personal journeys. Together, positive outcomes are achieved for all.

Working across five service areas (your futures, works, wellbeing, ageing and business) we support:
  • People who are unemployed
  • Older people who are lonely and isolated
  • People with health conditions
  • Young people at risk of leaving school without qualifications or work.
We also deliver team-building and communication activities for other organisations and businesses.

Pete’s story

When Pete was medically discharged from the RAF Regiment in 2010 with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder he was devastated:

“I felt like I had been thrown on the scrapheap. I thought my life was over; I felt worthless and useless and couldn’t see any way forward."

Fast forward to the present day and Pete is highly motivated, positive and enthusiastic:

“Life is great and I feel happy and optimistic about the future.”

So what happened to change Pete’s perspective on life? It’s simple really; he became involved with an award winning organisation called ‘Active Plus’ that turned his life around.

Pete had tried a few jobs after finishing his military service, including working as a teaching assistant, but was struggling to find a purpose in life and had drifted into isolation:

“I was a manic depressive, hiding away from the world and feeling lost. I had spent 21 years serving my country in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan; yet now I was hiding away at home with my curtains drawn, feeling angry and resentful. Then I was introduced to Active Plus and my life changed. I went along to observe some of their development courses for unemployed people, met some other injured veterans who were working as instructors and realised that here was something worth getting out of bed for.”

Active Plus is a ‘not for profit’ company that utilises the skills of wounded, injured and sick ex-military personnel to provide a range of personal development, education and wellbeing programmes for people in need. This helps to support the simultaneous rehabilitation and personal development of both their employees and volunteers, as well as the people in need within local communities.

Pete (pictured centre below) first started work with Active Plus as a volunteer, helping to deliver their various problem solving, teamwork and communication exercises, but quickly progressed to become a full-time paid employee:

“I feel better about myself… a lot of the (participants) think their world has come to an end and I can empathise with that. But we show them that they still have a lot to offer and begin rebuilding their self-esteem; we feed off each other really. It gives me a real sense of achievement when I see people improve. I know I’m making a difference to someone’s life every single day and it makes me feel good. I don’t want to let anyone down and I know there are a lot of other people out there who need our help.”
