SUCCESS STORIES

Stephanie Business Administration Manager at Winfield Hospital, Gloucestershire
Forces: Army
SSGT AGC(SPS)

"I left the Army in November 2018 after completing 27 years in the Army. During this time, I served with 8 different Regiments/units and 2 Multi-National Headquarters, finally leaving from HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Force in Gloucester.

"Being Admin and finance I was lucky to have varied job roles that also included being the PA to a 3-star General, and a recruiter for 3 years.

"The wide variety of skills that I gained during my time have stood me in good stead for future civilian employment. These were not only the trade and management courses I attended, but I had also used my Enhanced Learning Credits to enrol in an AAT Level 3 course to boost my knowledge and expertise.

"I attended a CTP provided Career Transition Workshop (CTW) in Tidworth, where we learnt how to write a CV and how to transfer our military skills into civilian recognised skills. We also had the opportunity to practise our interviewing technique on each other. Outside agencies also came and gave us presentations on their companies and job opportunities. This was very helpful as it was great to see that these companies wanted ex-military personnel to join their teams.

"I had originally applied for a PA role at Winfield hospital (Ramsay Health Care), but the team saw that my previous experience and skills would have been wasted and I would be better suited to the Business Administration Managers role that had just become available. I started in February 2019 and am now responsible for the finance business team, as well as the training of all of our hospital administrators. Additional responsibilities include building quotes for self-pay patients, and ensuring that all invoicing is numerically correct (I knew my finance training would come in handy!).

"I work with some amazing people and am thankful to have been given this opportunity by Ramsay Health. Since starting my job I’ve learnt to accept that not everyone has the same work ethic as myself, and that everyone has a different rate at which they work. Thankfully, my team have followed in my footsteps and are confident, strong team players now.

"For anyone leaving the military soon, Health Care is not just about doctors and nurses! There are so many non-clinical jobs in every hospital, so don’t pass by a job advert because it’s health related.

"I’m proud that Ramsay Health Care recognise the skills that ex-military personnel have to offer."

Harry Head of Clinical Services at The Dean Neurological Centre, Gloucestershire
Forces: Army

"I joined the Army in 1987, starting as a combat medical technician serving worldwide, including Northern Ireland and Bosnia, qualifying as a GP practice manager in the process. I transferred and trained as a nurse in 2004, and worked at Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham, later to become the QE hospital, part of which involved caring for the many wounded service mean and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. I myself served in both of these places several times, with the pinnacle of my career being the moment I was recognised in the operational honours list, where I was awarded the Royal Red Class 2nd class (ARRC). I ended my career as a Senior Officer overseeing healthcare governance for military secondary care.

"Having left school with just one qualification, it’s fair to say that the military gave me amazing opportunities; investing in me and helping me achieve not just a degree level education but also several post grad qualifications. The experiences along the way were just as amazing and so, similarly to many service personnel, I wondered how the next stage of my life would compare when I left the Army in 2018.

"I joined Ramsay Health in 2020. I found that many of the values I had lived by my whole life were represented in Ramsay. And just like the military, they believed in investing in people with an academy in place to support that. The skills I developed in the military were definitely put to good use early on, with the years spent dealing with crisis brought to the forefront during Covid. I’m sure my ex-military ways and expressions are a bit bizarre to some of my colleagues, but they’ve been incredibly accepting of me and I’m really enjoying being part of the team.

"Ramsay has been a fantastic next step from the military where I feel that I make a difference. And I genuinely hope it will be part of my future for a long time."
