Greater Manchester Police is the second largest police force in England and Wales, with an establishment of around 12,000 Police Officers and staff. We serve a population of nearly 3 million people with one of the most diverse communities found anywhere in the country.
As a result of the breadth support demanded from us, we have the widest variety of specialist roles outside of London, including:
- Firearms
- Dogs
- Mounted
- Tactical Aid
- Air Support
- Traffic Network
- Manchester Airport
In addition to these roles, our Public Protection and Serious Crime Branch have roles in:
- Major Incidents
- Serious and Organised Crime
- Economic and Cyber Crime
- Covert Policing
- Safeguarding
We also host ‘Counter Terrorism Policing North West’ at GMP Headquarters, with all of these roles being in addition to frontline policing across our 10 districts.
Not everybody wants to be a Police Officer, and so we also offer a variety of staff positions, including:
- Forensic Investigators
- Call Handlers
- Dispatchers
It’s easy to see many similarities between policing roles and those within Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, which is why we’ve seen personnel leaving the military be drawn to a second career in policing.
Greater Manchester Police has always had a close connection with our Armed Forces and we truly value the transferable skills and resilient work ethic Service leavers bring into policing.
