About Bensons for Beds

In the military, you have a mission and a purpose. We know it’s at the heart of what makes every serviceperson tick.

That focus is precisely what we have here at Bensons and why we’re the perfect fit for those looking to transition to civilian careers.

Our mission and purpose is simple – helping the nation get the best night’s sleep – because we know it’s importance to our health and wellbeing.

In fact, we put what we call ‘Sleep Wellness’ at the heart of everything we do.

Here at Bensons we have nearly 70 years of retail and 100 years of manufacturing experience, providing all that customers need to get that perfect night’s rest – from the best quality beds, frames and mattresses, to designing the perfect, tailored sleep experience.

We’re online and in 170-plus locations with an army of around 1800 colleagues, dedicated to our sleep mission.

We’re ambitious too. Under the new ownership of Alteri Investors we have an ambitious three-year plan to grow the business further, and achieve our goal to become the market leading bed retailer.

We know that military personnel provide unparalleled skills and that talent could have a home here at Bensons.

We’re investing in our digital business to enhance the online customer experience, where people’s journey researching products often starts. Our contact centre, manufacturing site and warehousing and distribution sites are also being developed; improving systems, equipment and processes that will ultimately help us grow to be best in class across all areas.

Our business is made up of 4 main areas: Manufacturing,
Retail, Logistics (Warehousing & Distribution), and Support Services

Our retail stores and online presence provide nationwide coverage for our customers. Our manufacturing site in Cambridgeshire is where we make our high-quality products, while our Logistics team store and deliver those products right to our customers’ homes. These operational business areas are all supported by our team of professionals and specialists across a wide range of support functions, ensuring our business is in great shape to serve our customers.

And just like the military, we have values too:

We’re Devoted – we look after our customers and teams as we would like to be looked after. Helping customers achieve Sleep Wellness through getting a great night’s sleep, and creating the environment where everyone can reach their potential are at the heart of everything we do.

We’re Driven – we’re passionate about our business and take accountability for achieving our goals and success. By working as one team and putting the customer at the heart of everything we do, we’re ensuring we succeed and never leave anyone behind.

We’re Daring - we strive to be different and embrace the chance to break new ground. We’re innovative in our approach to everything we do, ensuring everyone has fun and enjoys their experience with us.

Colin’s story

Colin joined our Bensons Taunton store in 2018 as a Sales Consultant after trying other civilian roles, following a total of 15 years with the Armed Forces:

“I tried other roles before joining Bensons but chose to go into sales as I found it easy and enjoyable. I can share life skills and knowledge with the team as well as our customers. I joined Bensons in 2018 and it is like a new family; colleagues support you and often have their own family members in the forces, so they understand my background. It’s really important to have that understanding and support. I can use my skills, am respected for what I can do, and can share and pass on my experience to younger colleagues.

"Another ex-Service leaver joined shortly after me and it was like welcoming a brother. We supported each other and knew that if either of us was having a bad day, we’d understand and be there for each other. There’s a good work/life balance in my role and I know I can switch off and enjoy my family time on my days off. I’d recommend Bensons to any and all Service leavers. There’s a good range of roles that suit multiple skillsets (including sales, IT and logistics) and I’m pleased to hear Bensons are trying to attract more Service leavers to the company.”

On hearing that we’re working with the Career Transition Partnership, Colin has suggested Bensons introduce a ‘transition team’ into the business - acting as a support network to help Service leavers with advice if ever they need to talk to someone who understands their challenges. We think this is a great idea and are busy trying to identify other Service leavers who already work with us that might wish to form such a network.

What’s next?

We’re planning some open days and activities which will be advertised on the CTP’s Events Calendar as well as our own employment channels. Keep an eye out for those we look forward to meeting you this year!
