Colin’s story
Colin joined our Bensons Taunton store in 2018 as a Sales Consultant after trying other civilian roles, following a total of 15 years with the Armed Forces:
“I tried other roles before joining Bensons but chose to go into sales as I found it easy and enjoyable. I can share life skills and knowledge with the team as well as our customers. I joined Bensons in 2018 and it is like a new family; colleagues support you and often have their own family members in the forces, so they understand my background. It’s really important to have that understanding and support. I can use my skills, am respected for what I can do, and can share and pass on my experience to younger colleagues.
"Another ex-Service leaver joined shortly after me and it was like welcoming a brother. We supported each other and knew that if either of us was having a bad day, we’d understand and be there for each other. There’s a good work/life balance in my role and I know I can switch off and enjoy my family time on my days off. I’d recommend Bensons to any and all Service leavers. There’s a good range of roles that suit multiple skillsets (including sales, IT and logistics) and I’m pleased to hear Bensons are trying to attract more Service leavers to the company.”
On hearing that we’re working with the Career Transition Partnership, Colin has suggested Bensons introduce a ‘transition team’ into the business - acting as a support network to help Service leavers with advice if ever they need to talk to someone who understands their challenges. We think this is a great idea and are busy trying to identify other Service leavers who already work with us that might wish to form such a network.
What’s next?
We’re planning some open days and activities which will be advertised on the CTP’s Events Calendar as well as our own employment channels. Keep an eye out for those we look forward to meeting you this year!
