Our smart working approaches allow greater use of technology in the way we carry out our business, ensuring we provide a working environment that works for everyone.

We’re a military-friendly organisation and are proud to have pledged our commitment to The Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. This means that we support the employment of reservists, and veterans: working in partnership with the Career Transition Partnership to make sure they’re aware of our employment opportunities.

We also do everything we can to offer flexibility when it comes to granting leave service to spouses and partners.

Our Programme

We understand the move from military to civilian life can be a significant change for you. To ease the transition and help you to decide on the next step in your career, our programme offers you the opportunity of a placement of up to two weeks, working with one of our teams across the UK in a field that suits your skill set and experience gained from your role in the military.

Our programme has been shaped by the experiences of Galliford Try employees who’ve previously worked or continue to work within the military. They’ll help you transition into a civilian role, supporting you both professionally and personally, acting as a ‘buddy’ and mentor. They’re available to those taking part in our work experience placement and to those who are recruited into permanent employment.

We want to give you the best opportunity to experience what it’s like to work at Galliford Try and what a career in construction could offer you. You’ll have regular one to one meetings with your supervisors and HR to ensure that you’re receiving a first-class placement that is aiding your decision on the next stage of your career.

At Galliford Try we recognise that ex-military personnel have outstanding experience, transferable skills and core values that can add significant value to the construction industry. From leadership skills to strategic thinking and problem solving, the strengths displayed by Service leavers and veterans are highly transferable in this sector.

We also recognise that every resettlement journey is unique. That is why our programme is open to any Service leaver able to complete the placement during their resettlement. We offer a range of placements across several business units, which vary from scheme to scheme, depending on candidate fit and business need. We also offer flexibility in start and end dates as applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.

In return, we’ll offer an opportunity to work on some of the UKs most exciting construction projects, in a fast-paced environment where each day brings new challenges. A competitive salary is offered for our permanent employment opportunities as well as a benefits package including: car or car allowance, pension, healthcare, discretionary bonus, and 28 days’ holiday plus bank holidays.

Our non-paid placement opportunities are offered for you to learn and understand the construction process, build new skills, and be supported in gaining work experience in a construction environment to enhance your potential for the future.

Meet some of our Buddy’s.

Dean Williams
After serving in the Royal Engineers for 12 years Dean has built a vast array of skills that he’s been able to apply to his role at Galliford Try, making his transition into a civilian role a positive experience.

Dean really enjoys his career with Galliford Try and recognises that leaving the military environment can feel like you’ve lost the military support network, order, and regimented way of life. He says it can take some time to adjust to civilian life, but believes military personnel are resilient and have developed transferable skills which means that they’re trained to deal with challenging and dynamic situations, all of which he believes are invaluable skills to Galliford Try.

Christian Houghton
Having only very recently left military life Chris has quickly found his feet in his new role. He feels that he’s been able to make a positive impact within our business and is really enjoying his new career with us. Chris joined the RAF at the age of 19 as a defence medic, serving from August 2016 to January 2021.

He now works as a Handover Administrator on our Highways England M56 J6-J8 project where he finds the team supportive and encouraging, and is enjoying the sense of comradery present across our project teams. Chris believes there are many similarities between serving in the RAF and the working environment in our business due to the fact the work and leadership style are like the modern-day military, where the workers and the work itself are both equally valued in importance.

Angela Frost
Angela left school at the end of 1976 and joined the South African Navy as a civilian soon after. Her roles in the Submarine Section consisted of stock control and the production of the monthly “Notice to Mariners” newsletter that was distributed to every person who went to sea.

Having no formal higher education qualifications, the only role she felt she was qualified for was in administration and she joined Galliford Try in 2004 as a Site Secretary. Her extensive experience and leadership in planning resources, coupled with the strong organisational and communication skills that she had developed in the Navy and several other construction companies, led to her being “head hunted” and asked to come back to Galliford Try in 2019.
