Flogas: Virtual Event and Veteran testimony

We’re delighted to be holding a virtual event with the CTP on 20th August. You’ll have the chance to meet our Drivers, who are ex-military personnel sharing their own personal career journeys, the do’s and don’ts of transition and what Flogas has to offer in terms of job opportunities, support and training.

Until then, here’s an insight into life with Flogas from William, who has recently been employed as a driver:
“I served for 12 years in the Royal Logistic Corps as a driver/communication specialist. My role was to provide communications up to Brigade level and to drive various military vehicles including HGV and armoured (wheeled) vehicles. As we have to work in different countries, this provided a wealth of driving experience, from the freezing cold Canadian winters to very hot and dry deserts. I served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In Iraq my Regiment were responsible for providing the very large convoys which usually consisted of 100+ vehicles support to transport our supplies from Kuwait to all of our forward operating bases. Afghanistan was different in that my team were on a continuous 2-day rotation of driving, providing security for our base and lastly QRF (quick reaction force) where we had to deal with various situations in Kabul. I was also selected to be a senior staff car driver, driving various high ranking officers, a role I spent quite a few years in.
"In my 12-year service I was based in the UK, Germany and Canada. I gained various qualifications through the Army ranging from IT, numeracy and literacy, to leadership, teamwork, digital communications and my advanced driver certificate. I was promoted to the rank of Corporal and completed all of my education and promotion courses.
"I’ve now worked for Robin at Flogas’ Edinburgh branch for approximately 2.5 months now. My role is a van delivery driver supplying all of our local customers with bottled gas. I'm now at the stage where I'm beginning to know the regular customers and the locations. In my short time with Flogas I’ve enjoyed the job. My boss Robin is very easy to work for and always keeps me right. I have found it useful working for someone like Robin who has years of experience and knows all of the ins and outs of the industry. Our yard in Edinburgh only has 3 members of staff including myself, Robin and another driver. It's a small team but with each of us doing our job everything seems to run smoothly."
