LondonEnergy operates the second largest waste contract in the UK, handling and processing nearly 750,000 tonnes of London’s waste every year. We have a dedicated team of people working across North London making a difference to the environment and the local community from the work we do. By processing household waste at our facility, we produce enough waste from energy to power 80,000 homes every year and recycle 70% of items through our Reuse and Recycling Centres.

Operating from eight sites in North London and employing over 300 people, LondonEnergy has an exciting future of energy generation and resource management on the Edmonton EcoPark site. We are shaping our operations to make way for the new state of the art Energy Recovery Facility to replace the existing waste treatment facility that has served us for nearly 50 years. The facility will be in operation from 2021 and will be able to provide enough power for around 127,000 homes.

Background

LondonEnergy (LEL), a leading Energy from Waste company based in North London, contracted via North London Waste Authority (NLWA) to provide waste management services to the seven North London Boroughs.

LondonEnergy’s mission is to divert household waste and recycling from landfill efficiently and responsibly by recycling household waste into electricity, compost and aggregate material.

LondonEnergy is an award winning industy leader for HSQE in Waste Management and has invested heavily in training and tools to enable the business to develop a positive safety culture. It is the start of a HSQE journey and LEL aspires to be on a par with Construction, Rail and other industries where HSQE is part of the day to day decision making and a core business value.

NLWA is delivering the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) which is the development of a world class Energy Recovery Facility and Reuse Recycling Facility at the existing site of the LEL Eco Park. As operator of the existing Energy Recovery and Recycling facility LEL plays a critical role to NLWA, in informing the design, provide operational assurance but also provide advice and oversight during the construction.

A fundamental role for LEL in this change is the Head of HSQE and LondonEnergy is seeking industry role models with strong communication, who can drive change converting strategy to task and influence the business and supply chain.

Job Responsibilities

The Head of HSQE is part of the LondonEnergy Senior Management Team and as such contributes to shaping the business, delivering business day to day and strategic objectives and being an advocate for the LondonEnergy values and goals.

The role will be responsible for leading the HSQE organisation with line management responsibility for the Senior Health and Safety Advisor (Health and Safety Advisors), Environmental and Systems Manager and the HSQE Data Analyst.

The role for LondonEnergy will be the custodian for HSQE best practice across the business through maintaining appropriate processes, tools and systems. The role will create a team of HSQE advocates within the direct reports and across the organisation through influencing the Senior Management Team.

The role will provide HSQE advice and recommendations to the Executive to support strategic planning and the rest of the Senior Management Team regarding functional deliverables.

The role is responsible for ensuring that LondonEnergy complies with its permitted obligations to the Environment Agency and any other duties to regulating bodies such as the Health Safety Executive.The role is a key interface to NLWA and its contractors during the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) and will establish an approach to enable awareness, oversight and delivery of safe working practices during construction.
