NLRC are looking for a Private Club Steward/Managers Based Near Woking
This private shooting club seeks two fulltime Steward/Managers to run its clubhouse operations including restaurant, bar and bedrooms from spring 2019. Positions would suit customer-focussed people who are reliable, trustworthy and have initiative. Package includes accommodation (3 bedroom house attached to clubhouse).
Background
You will be based at and live in the Club’s fine, colonial style clubhouse in the beautiful Conservation Area at Bisley Camp near Woking. The Club is a friendly private members’ shooting club with about 500 members. The 800m² clubhouse provides services similar to a pub with restaurant and accommodation. It currently operates for restricted periods during the year.
You will be responsible to the Club’s Committee and particularly the Committee’s Chairman. The Committee are members of the Club elected or appointed to manage the Club on behalf of the members. They are not employees and are present at the clubhouse only occasionally. The Club’s Treasurer and book keeper is a part-time employee of the Club and works closely with the Stewards.
The clubhouse can operate with two fulltime Stewards who between them provide most of the services, or with a single Manager who provides some of the services but relies more on procuring other services from contract staff as required. The Club has not decided whether it wishes to operate in future with Stewards or a Manager, and may well make that decision based on the candidates coming forward. This information has been prepared for two Stewards.
Job outline
You will be responsible for the provision of all non-shooting clubhouse services. Between them, the Stewards run the Bar, including the cellar, and the Dining Hall and kitchen, providing meals and drinks to members and their guests, and the accommodation, which is about 12 bedrooms. They maintain the clubhouse and its grounds in a clean and tidy state. They have purchasing responsibility for catering and Bar supplies. A van is provided for this purpose.
You will be responsible for engaging and managing contract staff to help at peak times. On average over the year, this is the equivalent of one fulltime person.
Anyone interested in these positions should understand that the working hours are unusual. Clubhouse services need to be provided 7 days a week for about 4 weeks in July (Bisley’s Imperial Meeting), at weekends for about eight months of the year and by prior arrangement in the off season and at other times. Whilst the Stewards work an average of c40 hours a week over the year, the hours worked in specific weeks vary greatly from the average. They work long hours for 7 days a week during the Imperial Meeting, and long hours for major events at some other weekends. However, these are balanced by shorter working weeks during the off season which is typically November to February. Apart from the Imperial Meeting, it is usual for the Stewards to take Mondays and Tuesdays as their “weekend”. The timing of holiday leave is similarly restricted. Most of it is normally taken after the Imperial and then during the off season.
Skills and qualifications
Between them, the Stewards need:
Experience in bar operation and management (including real ale), and kitchen operation and management (including cooking).
Good customer service skills.
To be self-starters and able to work on their own initiative.
Staff management skills.
Good spoken English.
To be a Licensed Trade personal license holder, or able and willing to gain this qualification. He/she will be the designated person for the Club’s premises alcohol licence.
Hold a driving licence.
Skills in using a computer to communicate with members by email, operate the computerised till system, and use Excel spreadsheets for planning etc.
To be trustworthy with firearms. The Club is associated with shooting and therefore with firearms. The Stewards do not have to hold Firearms Certificates but they must be of such standing as would satisfy the police as people who could be trusted with firearms.
The Club has a history of providing support to employees who would benefit from further relevant training.
Remuneration package
Depending on qualifications and experience, the principal features of the remuneration package are:
Salary: up to £22,000 pa
Performance-related bonus: up to £2,000 pa
Annual leave: 28 days pa
Accommodation (free of charge)
The clubhouse has an attached three bedroom house (86m²) with small garden. The Stewards are required to live in this house.
If the Club appoints a single Manager rather than two Stewards, the remuneration would be correspondingly higher.
