First Aid Emergency on Site

Category: Job Finding Publish date: 29/05/2020

First Aid Emergency on Site Instalcom Limited is a Utility Contractor formed in 1989. Based in London and with offices in Borehamwood, Charlton, Manchester and Edinburg, they supply utility contract services throughout the UK. In 2002 the company was acquired by O’Connor Utilities Limited who are the parent company based in Manchester.

Instalcom Ltd have been working alongside CTP for some years now, supporting Service leavers, spouses, and reservists to settle into work within the Utilities industry. Mainly, we recruit from CTP directly into our Telecoms business unit, where we provide full training (with no experience required) in our own training facilities in Charlton. Upon completion of training, delegates will have an Openreach accreditation.

Trainee Fibre Optic Engineers and Cable Pullers are recruited on a self-employed basis, with work from Monday – Friday, 7.30am – 5.30pm based in/around Greater London on the current Openreach Contract (though this area may move with Openreach’s request to supply other areas of the UK in future). All applicants are therefore expected to live a reasonable, travelable distance from London. The roles are great for hard working, problem solving individuals who can balance teamwork with individual work. You will generally work in a ‘2-man gang’, but will often be completing works from one end of the job whilst your ‘gang member’ is at the other end. You must be able to use your initiative to solve problems that arise on the job each day.

Please check out the vacancy on our website for more role-specific information www.instalcom.co.uk or email us at [email protected] to find out about our next career morning / opportunities with Instalcom.

CASE STUDY

When Adam Robinson (MEWP Supervisor) was leaving the services and re-joining civilian life back in November 2019 we invited him to a Career Morning at our Head Office in Borehamwood. The career mornings offer a presentation on the company with the Project Managers and HR. Attendees are also treated to a hands-on trial of some of the Fibre Splicing equipment, a biscuit, tea and an opportunity for questions. Adam attended the Career Morning and then had to consider the options laid out to him, both from Instalcom as a Trainee Fibre Optic Engineer and from his other prospective employers, one being a Gas company in India which was a settlement course that may have led to a job after a work placement.

Adam had no prior experience of Telecommunications or Fibre but took the leap and chose to give Instalcom a try. He undertook his two weeks training at our facilities in Charlton before joining another ‘gang’ and getting some hands on experience in the field. Adam possessed many qualities of our desired skillset, including his approach to work and leadership skills that allowed him to quickly progress to the role of Fibre Cities Supervisor, where he is now responsible for the supervision of 10 Fibre Engineers.

Adam Robinson was recently presented with a voucher by Daniel Rowan (Project Manager) and Richard Lewis (Project Manager) [good social distancing being observed] for his excellent response and first aid application at an accident in Plumstead High Street on 16th April.

Adam was driving towards the work site when the car involved in the accident overtook him. He then witnessed the car driving over the traffic island and mini roundabout before crashing into the work site and injuring our Civils Operative, Elliott Ransom. Having seen what had happened, Adam immediately attended the scene to see if anyone had been injured. When he arrived he found Elliott trapped under the car and covered in debris and a brick wall. With assistance from the site team they managed to lift the car and free Elliott's trapped legs. Adam then provided brilliant first aid whilst waiting for the emergency teams to arrive. Elliott has since had an operation on his leg and has been discharged from hospital to recover at home.

Instalcom are proud and grateful to have ex-services personnel like Adam join us and represent Instalcom! Adam was prepared to immediately take action during a situation which others may have found too shocking or distressing, and so we thank him for his actions and quick response which may well have prevented further damage.
