There are roles to suit everyone from front line roles such as nurses, care workers and physiotherapists to admin roles, catering, drivers and more.

Lynn works closely with Proud to Care and tells her story below of how she came to a career in care after serving in the armed forces.

“My name is Lynn Roddy, and I am now the Director of the Tavistock and Tamar Valley branch of Home Instead. I live in Tavistock, Devon, with my husband, daughter and son.

After a 16-year career as an Army officer in the Royal Signals, I moved to Devon back in 2011, with my husband Mike, then a Royal Marine and our 2 children. Having worked whilst the children were very small, I took the opportunity to be around for the children in their primary school years. With a serving heart, I immersed herself in voluntary activities, running the PA, managing sports teams and leading parenting courses for the local community.

My decision to start Home Instead Tavistock and Tamar Valley was influenced by my own personal experiences of the care sector.

My involvement with care came about when my mum, a fiercely independent lady who lived at home, started to struggle with day to day tasks. Like many people, I didn’t know where to start or who to go to for advice. I personally experienced how difficult it was to find quality and consistent care. Rushed visits were the norm with different stressed carers focussing on completing set tasks rather than mum’s very real need for companionship…someone to sit and have a cup of tea and a chat, someone who could help me keep mum socially active. Mum deserved so much better. As mum’s health declined and seeing me so worried, mum asked to go into a care home. Mum saw how difficult it was for me to juggle my own family with the additional role of her care. However, mum would have dearly loved to stay in her own home……I came across Home Instead after a period of reflection some months after mum passed away.

I am now just over a year into my ownership of Home Instead Tavistock and Tamar Valley and am loving every minute. I cannot thank my team of office staff and CAREGivers enough for the difference they make to our clients lives every day”.
