The inside view
Steven Lord was a Royal Engineer for nearly 25 years, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia. Since joining Clancy as a Safety Advisor, he has become an integral part of our team working with Thames Water to help provide clean water for 15 million people. He’s now leading Clancy’s Armed Forces Employee Network to support fellow service leavers.
Here’s what he has to say about his journey:
“After working in military engineering and communications, I wanted a career where I could keep my brain switched on with plenty of opportunities for development.
“My early civilian roles weren’t quite the right fit, but I found that Clancy respected the critical attributes I’d developed in the forces and wanted to help me make the best of these. This isn’t just about patience and discipline, but also being positive and creative to bring out the best in yourself and others.
“I was drawn to health and safety after spending so much time protecting people and working with rigorous systems in the forces. Now I ensure that teams onsite can carry out their critical work, safe from threats like striking an electricity cable or manual accidents.
“Clancy has supported my progression through leadership training and helping me to become a qualified mental health first aider – something that’s very important to me.
Maybe it’s because Clancy is a family business, but right from the start I felt this was a company focused on people. Whether or not you have relevant experience when you apply, if you have the right attitude, they want to help you succeed.

- Armed forces employment network providing support and mentoring for new ex-service recruits from employees who have already successfully transitioned into civilian life
- Special leave policy for serving reservists with an additional 10 days paid leave per annum to attend annual training
