A Day in the Life of ....... A Tanker Driver in the Winter

We spoke to one of our employees about his typical day at work. Here’s what he had to say.
“A typical day for me will include an early start, however in the winter months, I need to plan extra time for the road conditions and need to be extra vigilant with preparing the delivery vehicle.
Daylight hours are a lot shorter so this needs bearing in mind for potential deliveries made during "twilight" or even darkness. Particular attention must be taken to ensure the correct products and quantities are loaded into the vehicle.
During winter, generally the roads are busier and together with the weather pose a greater risk for road accidents. I need to be up to date with road accident information to ensure I am able to plan my deliveries to avoid delays in delivery times for customers. My role includes both commercial and domestic deliveries; and I have been known to end up in the middle of muddy field!
My day includes frequent contact with customers so I ensure my customer service is on point and am always police and professional. I have been offered hot drinks by customers, so it definitely pays to be nice!
Once deliveries are finished, I complete my paperwork and always ensure this is kept up to date. The days tend to be lengthy, up to 12 hours during the winter months, however once the paperwork is complete I can call it a day and head home.
I really enjoy my job. Being a tanker driver, I get to drive through countryside and get the best of both worlds. You are your own boss and whilst doing deliveries, you get to meet a broad range of people. Every day is different!”
