Not just broking and underwriting

Category: Events Publish date: 01/12/2020

Not just broking and underwriting Marsh is a global insurance broker and risk adviser, headquartered in New York and with offices in over 130 countries globally. In the UK, Marsh provides insurance broking and risk advisory services to organisations ranging from FTSE 100 to individual clients, from over 60 offices.

However, Marsh, and insurance more widely, isn’t just about broking and underwriting. Service leavers have found roles in areas as diverse as consultancy, operations, project management and policy wording.

Judson left the Royal Navy in 2016 having served 13 years as a Logistician Writer. He worked in a variety of environments both in the UK and overseas. The stakeholder engagement, organisational and leadership skills he learned now come to the forefront in the execution of his role as a Bid and Project Manager within Marsh’s IMPACT Team. Since joining Marsh in April 2020, Judson has been involved in various projects relating to COVID-19 alongside his core role of managing proposals. He said, “The can-do attitude, organisational skills and discipline of a Service person is very much valued in the business world. My role as a Bid Manager involves bringing together assets from across the different arms of the business to respond to client specific needs and timelines.”

Rich also joined Marsh in April 2020 after 16 years in the Royal Engineers. His experience as a critical national infrastructure analyst combined with his engineering knowledge allowed him to enter Marsh as a terrorism and security consultant. As part of Marsh Advisory, he has worked on a regional resilience programme and authored a number of proposals for terrorism studies due to start in the new year. He said, “Consultancy in insurance is an excellent opportunity for Service leavers looking to use the specialist skills they gained in the military. A role in consultancy requires the ability to gather and analyse data from documents and interviews, as well as organisational, project management and interpersonal skills.”

The insurance industry offers a range of roles beyond the well-known broking or underwriting. The industry recognises that skills are more important than specific qualifications, and this provides a chance for more junior Service leavers to start a fresh career with excellent opportunities for the future. Marsh regularly post jobs to the CTP’s job board, RightJob and are part of the Lloyd’s Military Network.

Marsh also has a growing community of veterans and reservists. The company recently received a Gold award under the MoD Employer Recognition Scheme, the first UK insurance broker to achieve the accolade. A Service leaver joining Marsh would find a welcoming military network and a career that recognises the skills and experience accumulated as part of a military career.
