Transition to Teaching Programme
In the UK there is currently a shortage of secondary school teachers in the STEM subjects; Science, ICT, Engineering and Maths. The Transition to Teaching Programme has been designed to promote a career in teaching to high calibre employees (with relevant degrees) who are considering a mid to late career change, or whom suddenly find themselves unemployed. A degree in a STEM subject plus relevant industry experience is often a winning combination to a forward thinking teacher.
This programme offers individuals wishing to teach secondary Maths, Science or ICT, a free and comprehensive programme of support. They can also offer advice to anyone who is looking to teach other subjects, or different age ranges, of the best point of contact.
Programme Support
Every Transition to Teaching participant will receive a comprehensive package of support consisting of:
- support from Professional Development Advisers throughout the programme, including in the term following graduation from the programme, and continued access to the Virtual Academy.
- a personalised support plan, running alongside their initial teacher training, produced and updated through a needs analysis and accessible online.
- face-to-face coaching sessions through the eighteen months plus additional telephone or online coaching where required.
- attendance at events relating to professional development needs.
- access to a range of regional networking events throughout the duration of the programme.
- access to peer learning e-communities and online content as well as additional online functionality; and
- confidence that the guidance and advice provided through the Transition to Teaching programme complements and builds upon that received through ITT course tutors and that participants are well supported and prepared for their first teaching post.
