Public Sector Careers
Public sector employment continued to rise in the year to February 2010, with a 46,000 increase to almost 6.1 million. In contrast, employment in the private sector fell by 527,000, to less than 23 million in the same period.
It is reasonable to expect that with the current economic climate and new Government, the future size and shape of the Public sector will continue to be scrutinized with a view to finding efficiencies. This could result in downsizing and a consequential reduction in recruitment, however due to its size and complexity, and the necessity to deliver front line services, any restructuring could take time to implement. It is certainly, therefore, worth monitoring national, regional, and local developments within the Public sector, and crucially to keep an open mind.
What is more, despite the predictions from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), that the public sector jobs market will experience huge cuts across the next five years, the Sector will still be larger than it was in 1997.
The Government is committed to helping Service leavers. In July 2008, the Secretary of State for Defence, with the Prime Minister's endorsement, presented to Parliament a Ministry of Defence (MOD) Command Paper (Cm 7424) entitled 'The Nation's Commitment: Cross-Government Support to our Armed Forces, their Families and Veterans'. An aspect of this Paper is concerned with ensuring Service leavers are not disadvantaged when seeking public sector employment.
The Career Transition Partnership is now working with a number of Government Departments towards developing this initiative and will continue to do this on behalf of Service leavers. Click here to read more on this.
