Housing and Finance Briefs
Housing and Financial Aspects of Resettlement (FAR) Briefings
Where, when and who can attend these briefings?
Attendance at these events is treated as duty (so Allowances may apply). They are usually held at Regional Resettlement Centres and may be attended at any point in a Service person's career, although priority is given to Service leavers with 9 months or less to discharge. Housing briefings are "All Ranks". Financial briefings are tailored, where numbers permit, to different rank groups. Spouses are welcome to attend. To find out where and when the briefings are happening go to the Workshops and Training Courses section.
In Germany these briefings are held three times a year in various locations - call Herford RRC or your local AEC for dates and venues.
Housing - The Options Briefing
Housing - The Options Briefings are run by the Joint Services Housing Advice Office (JSHAO) and lasts all day. These briefings focus on the various accommodation options available post-discharge including the help offered by the Single Persons Accommodation Centre for Ex-Services (SPACES).
Financial Aspects of Resettlement (FAR) Briefing
The FAR Briefing is run by the Forces Pension Society and covers all aspects of the Armed Forces Pension Schemes (AFPS 75 & AFPS 05). The FAR briefing normally lasts all day but the format varies from venue to venue depending on the target audience and the numbers in each area. Exact details of the format in your region are available here
The Forces Pension Society presentation will cover all aspects of the AFPS including; Final Service Pay, Pension and Terminal Grant, Pension Codes, Commutation, Death Benefits and Preserved Pensions. There will also be information on Income Tax, Emigration, State Pension and other DWP benefits.
At most FAR Briefings there is also a qualified Financial Advisor who will give a presentation containing generic financial advice and an offer of follow-up personal financial advice. There will also be a handout giving other useful points of contact.
