Trial Attachments

You can spend time with a civilian employer for work experience and on-the-job training. This is called a Civilian Work Attachment. You can also attend an external course outside of the CTP to improve your employability, which is known as External Training. Time taken to use either is deducted from your GRT. The Civilian Work Attachment may be used at any point during the last two years of service; External Training is normally used during the last 9 months of service.

What is a Trial Attachment?

A Trial Attachment or Civilian Work Attachment (CWA) is basically a way of trying out a civilian job. There is no definite length for a Trial Attachment, as they are arranged to suit you and the employer. They can range from one day to over five weeks, depending on the nature of the work and your own Personal Resettlement Plan. Undertaking an attachment will help you gain knowledge and experience of a civilian workplace, and improve your chances of gaining employment.

Potential benefits of Trial Attachments:

  • They provide beneficial work experience for Service leavers in accordance with their Personal Resettlement Plan (PRP).
  • Enable Service Leavers to generate networking contacts.
  • Allow Service Leavers to find out more about an industry or occupation so that they make better informed decisions with regard to any further resettlement training and job searching.
  • Give employers an opportunity to assess Service Leavers as potential employees, without incurring salary costs or any obligation to offer them employment.

To do a trial attachment you will need to complete, and have authorised, a MOD Form 1746 - Click here to download this form
