Post Discharge Support

The government's Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers a wide range of support to unemployed people in the form of training, advice and grants through the Jobcentre Plus network (includes Job Centres and Benefit Agency offices). Provided you have served in the Armed Forces for at least 6 months, you will have preferential access to DWP provision. Applications by ex-Service personnel for assistance from the DWP can also be made immediately upon discharge (most people have to be unemployed for 6 months before qualifying).

If you do not have a job lined up when you leave the Armed Forces, then you may apply for benefits immediately upon discharge, e.g. the Jobseeker's Allowance. To find out more about which benefits you may be entitled to, and for further information about the full range of DWP support, enquire at your local Job Centre. The Jobcentre Plus network also has a website www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk containing details about the various services available.

Learning and Skills Councils (LSCs) in England and Wales and Scotland facilitate a wide range of training, which you can use prior to leaving through a combination of terminal leave or annual leave, or upon discharge. Access to LSC facilities is arranged through your Job Centre.

A large number of Service charities and regimental organisations exist to help you, the most obvious example being The Royal British Legion. Many of these bodies provide financial assistance in times of hardship, while a number also provide help with training and grants towards finding new employment or working for yourself. To find out more information about Service-related associations and charities that may be of relevance to you, speak with an SRA.  A few of the many ex-Forces organisations are also listed in the Related Sites section of this website.
