Self Employment Awareness

Course Aim

The course aims to equip you with the knowledge and tools with which to assess the viability of starting your own business.

Our Approach

People come to the course with a wide variety of business ideas, and while we prefer that you attend with a business idea in mind, some people just come along to see what is involved in setting up a business. The way in which we respond to the complexity of individual needs is twofold.

Firstly we make the most of the time available by running additional workshops on two subjects that need to be explored in depth. These are Selling and Marketing Skills and Consultancy.

Secondly we provide practical exercises to give greater understanding on key subjects like Break Even Point and VAT. We also invite speakers from HM Revenue and Customs, Small Business Associations and when possible someone who has left the forces and established a successful business.

Objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify your personal strengths and weaknesses against the competencies needed to run a business
  • State what is meant by a USP and define this for your business idea
  • Define the different forms of business set up and the key considerations for making your choice.
  • List the elements that need to be present in a business plan and evaluate your plan against this
  • Describe the purpose and content of both the Profit and Loss account and Cash Flow documents and identify the Break Even Point.
  • Explore different methods of advertising and chose the best approach for your business
  • Increase your knowledge of different sources of funding and support
  • Form an action plan to progress your business plan to the point when you can make an informed decision
