Training
Are any examination fees/Institute memberships included in the course costs?
No. All examination and Institute memberships fees must be paid for separately. Although a receipt will be provided to enable Service Leavers to claim 80% up to £175 from Standard Learning Credits.
Does that mean I might not get on the course?
Some courses fill up quicker than others so it might be wise to ask the advice of the RTC staff which courses are more popular and use resettlement funding for these and stand by for those less popular.
Do I book all my courses through the RTC?
All courses held at the RTC or any of the Regional Resettlement Centres can be provisionally booked on the following numbers: 01252 348637/94222 3637 or 01252 348519/94222 3519.
How can I find information about the courses available through the RTC Aldershot?
RTC course brochures are available at any Regional Resettlement Centre, your local Education Centre or on this web site.
RTC course details are available at: www.ctp.org.uk/rtccoursebooklet
How do I choose which resettlement course to attend?
The first and key step for a Service leaver (through their Career Transition Workshop and with guidance from their Career Consultant and Regional Employment & Training Manager (RETM)) is to:
Assess the skills, experience, knowledge, and qualifications that he or she has to offer in the market place, consider their personal needs and aspirations, determine their target areas for seeking employment.
For some Service leavers (those with skills, experience, and knowledge that translate well into the civilian world) this may be a simple exercise. Nevertheless, choices not previously considered may emerge, and may provide better alternatives. For the majority, however, it will require some work to identify their 'marketable assets'.
Once a Service leaver has a clear and realistic view of what type of employment to target, he or she can then (with the aid of their consultant) tackle the 'how do I get there'. It is at this stage that training is considered as part of the Service leaver's Personal Resettlement Plan (PRP).
The question to be answered is: What training would be best to update my skills, or gain a qualification, and improve my chances of employment now or in the future? Training may be followed by a civilian work attachment (CWA), to enable you to gain more experience with a potential employer.
If the answer to doing some training is yes, then the consultant would advise on the most suitable course, and recommend that the Service Leaver's Service Resettlement Advisor gives approval.
How much money do I get?
You do not actually get any money for contract-funded training. However, depending on the length of service you may be eligible for up to £534, known as the Individual Resettlement Training Costs (IRTC) grant. Many courses at RTC Aldershot are contract funded and your IRTC is abated by £26.70/day. Thus your £534 equates to four weeks training. For non-contract funded courses you are required to pay by card/cash/cheque prior to commencement of the course.
How much will it cost if I do a course on Stand-by?
Stand-by charges are £15 per day, payable on the first day of the course. Remember there are no guaranteed places with a Stand-by booking!
If I book a course at Aldershot does it include accommodation?
All military accommodation must be booked through the Central Booking Service on 01252 352154/94222 3154. Certificates of Non-Suitability/Availability are not automatically issued.
If I don't stay in the transit accommodation where can I stay?
With permission from your unit, bookings can be made through the Defence Hotel Reservation Sevice on 0844 8484422 or a list of local facilities is available from the RTC, but it should be noted that this list in no way endorses a recommendation by the RTC.
I've got seven weeks resettlement and want to do quite a few courses. What if I want to do my full seven weeks training?
As the IRTC funding equates to four weeks training you can attend the remaining 3 weeks on a stand by basis.
What's the difference between a Stand-by booking and a normal course booking?
A Stand-by booking is made in the same way as a normal booking but is only confirmed ten days before the beginning of the course if the course is not full. Anyone using resettlement funding would take priority.
